Chapter 01: Heruam

“Tobias.” A smooth voice says, the room dimly lit, it’s air filled with cigar smoke and the sounds of ice clinking glass. It’s source a rather hansom man of late middle age. A clean stubble covers his sharp jawline and medium length, notably well kept hair combed back. “If you can promise me that you’ll pay me back… I’ll get you a part.”

Toby, or legally Tobias Justin Knox, sits in an uncomfortable, obviously expensive chair across from the local crime lord: casino owner and former debt collector, Bradley Horr; as they discuss the topic of Bradley securing the young man a lead role in an upcoming film.

“You can promise me that, right?” Bradley questions as Toby leaned forward in seat; his palms drenched from the stress and nervous sweat that covers him.

“Yes, sir.” Toby hesitantly responds, knowing he’d regret it later however had found himself in a state of desperation.

“I’ve had a lot of people give me promises that they thought they wouldn’t keep.” Bradley states, giving a final warning. “But I guarantee you. You will keep the promises made to me.” His words ring in Toby’s ears and embed themselves in the back of his mind.

Nearly four years pass as Toby deals with the most stressful times of his life, going from set to set, churning out character after character as he plays minor roles thrown at him for his performance and fan admiration for Griffin, in the cult favorite 1997 adaptation of Falcon’s Dream.

Finding himself in yet another uncomfortable chair, a woman sits across from him as an interview is in the process of setting up. Questioning the cameraman if there was anything he could to do make his life easier, Toby is informed to not jerk around too much, to which he gives a respectful nod and looks to the interviewer as they’re informed they’re starting, offering a soft smile.

“Hello, I’m Rebeca Daws with J.K.M. and I am here with special guest Toby Knox.” Looking over to Toby, he responds politely, questioning how she was doing, to beginning the final interview for the day. “I’m doing good, Toby, thanks for asking.” Offering an obviously fake smile and pushing her dark grey glasses up her face, she continues “I’m sure you’re aware of this, but a leak happened a few days ago that revealed your character doing some nasty things, and with this leak was a message, saying, and I qoute; ‘check out the next big bad for Heruam’. What can you tell us about this? Is it true, are you going to be playing the big bad guy for this season?”

Thrown for a loop, his eyes raise as he gives the statement “I, uhh.. I hadn’t heard about that leak, no. That’s news to me.”

“Oh?” Rebeca questioned, her black and white stripped shirt positioned to be revealing stretches as she shifts to bring up her phone, pausing the interview for just a moment as she brings up and shows Toby a couple of photos of himself as the antagonist for the second season of Heruam.

“Well..” Raising his hands, he lets out a deep breath. “You got me.” a nervous laugh escapes him. “Here’s the kicker…. I don’t know.” With a moment of pondering and stuttering, Toby feels a bit cornered, not expecting such a revelation as it was supposed to be kept secret. “Well, it’s safer to say that I don’t know everything. I finished a scene just today and I don’t have any idea in the sequence of things it will go.”

“You have read the script, haven’t you?” Rebeca rushes in, interrupting Toby, causing him to pause.

“Yeah, the thing about Between Earth and Heaven, is that there are like twelve versions of the scripts and they purely depend on the director of that episode as well as how certain scenes play out… Very, very different from any other production, to my knowledge, ever. I do know that my character will be a challenge for our brave hero. Maybe even the biggest challenge yet.”

“Whoa, big words from a big man. Speaking of which, I heard you had to gain almost fifty pounds of muscle for this role, as well as take several fighting classes?”

“Martial arts, and yeah. It was thirty, but… Certainly felt like I was working towards fifty. I’m uhh… an ectomorph by nature, so it’s not super easy for me to build the kind of muscle like some of the other stars in the scene now, but.. Well, practice makes perfect.”

“What do you mean by that?”

“Uhh…” Unsure of how to respond, Toby takes a brief moment to slowly explain “It’s a saying, basically through repetition you eventually accomplish your goal.”

Nodding along with his words, hardly paying him hardly attention, Rebeca waits until he finishes to question “And you claimed earlier that Heruam has a unique way of dealing with it’s script, has that affected your work flow at all or having to memorize all those different versions much get kind of confusing as to what you should say when and where you should be, right?”

“No, actually, all the directors for the series sat down with us, not at once but individually, when we were first brought on and hired and told us what it was going to be like. They made it very clear that they trust us, or at least most of the lead actors for our ability to get in character and our improv.

“Oh, so are the scripts more… ‘Roughly this is the direction’ types of things?”

“Generally, yeah, at least for myself and Danial they have been. But like I said, it’s a.. Very unique in how it’s going about developing.”

“You said your ability to get into character, how well would you say that you identify with your character? And are you one of those method type actors that have been trending lately?”

“I wish I was as cool as he is.” Toby scoffs to himself. “I asked my stunt double to show me a couple of the moves, and I don’t know how he did it, wound up hurting myself trying to copy him.” he lets out with a chuckle. “Morally though, I do play a bad guy, and I don’t think many would say otherwise. As for the second question, I try to get in the head of my character a bit. Play around to know how he’d do something, but I can’t say I become my character. While I applaud those that do, it’s something that I have a bit of trouble with.”

“Oh, so you aren’t doing the stunts yourself?” Rebeca leaped

“I’m working on doing more, but.. I’m not quite the athlete required just yet. I got the muscle for it now, but man… Doing those chase and fighting scenes for hours at a time can be pretty demanding, not counting the dangerous falls and throws that these characters go through, though it pains me to admit.” He jokingly clutches his chest, showing his pearly whites shown off along with the piece of mint gum he had been chewing on through out the interview.

Laughing with his last comment, though obviously fake, she gives a nice, genuine smile as she continues her questions.

“Well, I’m sure you’ll get there, now we’ve heard rumors that Arthur Kings, the main villain in season one will be returning, and as I’m sure you know, he died at the ending of the first season, what can you tell us about that? Is it true or false, and will your character share a similar fate?”

“Well, I can’t go spoil endings, but, if he does return, he better come back big. With the craziness on set as well as the variety of possible scripts, I wouldn’t be surprised if they had three or so versions with him returning.”

“What are some of your hobbies?”

“Before it became my career, acting was the main one. Now, aside from keeping myself in shape… Dance is a great hobby for anyone to take up. Especially if you’re going to be doing things that require good balance.”

“Oh, so you like to dance? Do you know any moves or do you just do what comes in the moment?”

“Well… Uh… I guess I do what’s in the moment. It’s up to the mood, I suppose. If you start break dancing in a ballroom, you might get some funny looks.”

With Toby giving a smile, Rebeca gives another fake laugh, coming back with “How well do you get along with the crew? I’ve talked to Danial Horr, the actor for Brock Din, our main character and he seemed like a pretty cool guy.”

“I don’t get up with him too much, actually. We’ve mostly met on set, and it’s business time. But he’s a good guy.”

“Alright, what about the rest of the crew, do you get along with them? The director, camera people, other actors? I noticed you were being particularly nice to our camera cam before we started.”

Cracking a smile, Toby takes a minute to look into the camera for a moment before back to Rebeca “You know, the oddest person became my pal. The boom mic gal dropped the boom on my head, and that started a conversation and a half. All in all, though, everyone there is super cool and determined to make the show as good as it can be.”

“Oh yeah? So is it safe to say you’re no longer on the market for any of those girls out there looking forward to getting your autograph?”

Making a bit of a face, segueing into a little laugh “As long as I’m not swarmed, autographs are a piece of cake. Man, even the idea of having fans is still leaving me dumbfounded.”

“Well let’s hope you get more fans than haters when Heruam season two comes out next October. For now that was all the time we have, thank you mister Knox for joining us.” Reaching out to give Toby a hand shake, he meets her halfway,

“It’s been a pleasure miss Daws.”

A final smile is given to the camera as Rebeca ends the interview “This has been Rebeca Daws with J.K.M. with special guest Toby Knox, good night everyone.” After a few seconds, she gives a sigh and leans back in her seat, finally no longer dealing with the actor who rolls his neck and leans back himself, saying with a chuckle.

“Seems I’m not the only actor in that interview.”

Making a mocking face, she stands and walks away, calling out to one of the people behind the cameras.

Before he can fully stand, Toby’s assistant and bodyguard, Shawn Needlems, a young to middle aged, body building black man, wearing a black sleeveless ribbed undershirt which flaunts his toned body and a black wave cap that covers his short, waved hair walks up to him, stating “Brinir called during the interview, he wants to talk about your relationship.”

Knowing this phrasing is like throwing a decapitated body in a shark tank around the journalists, Toby gives a nod and begins walking away from the crew before continuing the conversation. “What does he mean by relationship?”

“I think he means your character’s relationship.” Shawn explained, believing Toby had forgotten his costars again, an event which had happened once before.

“I get that, but why would he call me? Wouldn’t that be more on the director’s side?”

With a shrug from Shawn, Toby takes the phone and dials Brinir back, who picks up after a few rings.

“Hey, kid, how’s it going?”

“It’s going good, I was just wanting to ask you how often do you think you visit me?”

“Uh..” Toby verbally paused, his pace quickening as he wanted to get home as quickly as possible, ready for a shower. “Look, that’s a question for the writers or directors. It’s not that I don’t want to answer, it’s that it’s not my choice on the little character development stuff.”

“Right, no, yeah… Yeah, I get that, but.. I was just asking you, as the actor, because while they make the facts, you bring him to life, so I thought you’d have an idea.”

“Well…” Toby pondered for a second “Hm.. Probably every day that he’s not out killing baddies, or as often as he can. From what I’ve gotten, he loves his son very much.”

“Right, alright… So if I were to tell you I’m gay, how do you think you’d react.” the young, not even twenty actor questioned.

“I think he’s too far gone to care about something like that.”

“Alright, thanks Toby, see you on set tomorrow!”

“See you then.” Toby says, hanging up and continuing to himself with a shake of the head “That kid is something else.”

“I’m surprised he had time to talk, pretty sure he got the main role for that vampire movie.” Shawn inputs.

“Kid makes time for what he likes. And I’m pretty sure he likes playing for the show.”

“Always good to like your job, last two talents I guarded fuckin’ hated their jobs. One killed himself and the other left entirely, went on to open a bar.”

“Good bar?”

“O’Doherty’s pub. Considered the best around.”
