Biology and Appearance

The Scied are a sapient race of arachnid-like creatures, their forms and behaviors mirroring their natural cousins but elevated to a level of complexity and intelligence that rivals other sapient races. While they share a common core physiology, their adaptations have led to a wide variety of sub-species, each specialized for different environments or roles.

  • Core Traits: All Scied have eight limbs—four used for locomotion and four for manipulation. Their carapaces range in color from muted earth tones to vibrant hues depending on their environment, often displaying intricate, natural patterns resembling tribal markings. Their faces feature multifaceted eyes that can see in multiple spectrums, along with a central pair of forward-facing eyes for focus. Mandibles frame their mouths, which can produce subtle vocalizations and clicks for communication. Scied are bioluminescent, with faint glowing patterns that vary by subspecies, used for communication, intimidation, or courtship.
Webweavers
  • Appearance: Slim and elegant, with long, spindly limbs perfect for crafting intricate webs. Their carapaces are smooth and shimmering, often in shades of silver or translucent white.
  • Special Traits:
    • Produce webs strong enough to catch metal projectiles.
    • Bioluminescent patterns on their abdomens that shift during communication.
  • Habitat: Dense forests or urban areas, where they create elaborate aerial networks.
Burrowers
  • Appearance: Stockier and covered in bristly, earthen-colored fur for camouflage. Their legs are shorter but immensely powerful, adapted for digging.
  • Special Traits:
    • Can sense vibrations in the ground to detect movement from miles away.
    • Produce silk infused with minerals for structural reinforcement.
  • Habitat: Deserts, plains, or underground cave systems.
Nightspinners
  • Appearance: Dark, shadowy carapaces with muted, matte finishes to avoid reflecting light. Their eyes are smaller but hyper-sensitive to low-light environments.
  • Special Traits:
    • Silent movement due to padded, specialized feet.
    • Ability to produce a pheromone mist that disorients prey or foes.
  • Habitat: Jungles, ruins, or shadowy mountain regions.
Reefweavers
  • Appearance: Sleek, with vibrant, aquatic-colored carapaces (turquoise, coral red). Their limbs are slightly flattened for swimming, and they have small gill-like structures for underwater breathing.
  • Special Traits:
    • Produce waterproof silk for creating underwater dens or capturing prey.
    • Bioelectric shocks for defense.
  • Habitat: Coastal cliffs, reefs, or deep underwater caves.
Titanspinners
  • Appearance: Enormous, with heavily armored, dark-colored carapaces and spike-like protrusions on their legs. They tower over other Scied subspecies, reaching heights of 8-10 feet.
  • Special Traits:
    • Immense strength, capable of lifting several tons.
    • Webbing that hardens into a resin-like material for weapons or traps.
  • Habitat: Mountains or heavily fortified colonies.
Arachne

Appearance:

  • In their natural forms, Arachne have hideous, half-human, half-spider appearances, with segmented limbs, mandibles, and a bloated abdomen. Their human-like faces often have exaggerated features, such as extra eyes, sharp teeth, or elongated jaws.
  • Some Arachne possess the ability to transform into strikingly beautiful humanoid women, using this disguise to lure prey into their traps.
  • Their carapace often features intricate, web-like patterns that reflect their superiority complex.

Special Traits:

  • Venom: Their bite delivers a potent venom that can paralyze or even kill prey, depending on the dosage.
  • Deception: Arachne who transform into humanoid women are highly intelligent and manipulative, often using their beauty and charisma to infiltrate human settlements.
  • Master Web Artistry: Arachne weave the most intricate webs among the Scied, creating both deadly traps and dazzling displays of craftsmanship.

Habitat: Hidden fortresses within forests, caves, or abandoned ruins.

Role in Society: The Arachne see themselves as superior to all other sapient races, including humans and their own Scied kin. They operate on the fringes of Scied society, often pursuing their own agendas. While some Arachne cooperate with Web-Clans, most maintain isolated communities and harbor ambitions of exterminating or enslaving humanity.

Their intelligence and venomous cunning make them invaluable in political or military strategies, but their disdain for other sapient races creates tension. Clans often tolerate Arachne out of respect for their capabilities, though rivalries and betrayals are not uncommon.

Dierns

Appearance: Dierns are nightmarish hybrids with the elongated, slithering body of a snake and the hairy legs, eyes, and mandibles of a tarantula. Their segmented legs allow them to scale surfaces, while their multiple eyes gleam with predatory focus. They often feature venomous fangs that protrude visibly from their mouths.

Special Traits:

  • Ambush Predators: Dierns are ambush specialists, capable of lying perfectly still for days before striking with lightning-fast speed.
  • Dual Venom: Their fangs inject a paralytic venom, while their tarantula-like chelicerae can deliver a corrosive enzyme that dissolves organic matter.
  • Camouflage: Dierns can alter the coloration of their hairy bodies to blend seamlessly with their surroundings.

Habitat: Dense jungles, swampy regions, or underground lairs.

Role in Society: Dierns are solitary by nature, often acting as assassins or scouts for Web-Clans when they choose to engage with Scied society. Their terrifying appearance and deadly efficiency make them both respected and feared among their kin. Despite their independence, they are deeply loyal to Matron Spinners when they align with a clan.

Dierns are viewed as the Scied’s shadowy enforcers. Their ambush tactics and corrosive venom make them indispensable in times of conflict. They rarely settle permanently in Web-Clans, instead acting as lone agents or allies during times of need.

Society and Culture

The Scied are a deeply communal and hierarchical species, valuing order, strategy, and innovation. They organize themselves into "Web-Clans", large, interwoven communities where each member plays a specific role based on their subspecies and skills.

  • Hierarchy: At the top of every Web-Clan is a Matron or Patron Spinner, typically a Titanspinner or a Webweaver of exceptional skill. Beneath them are Silken Guardians (military leaders) and Artisan Weavers (craftspeople and engineers). The lower ranks are filled by scouts, laborers, and hunters.
  • Silkcraft and Innovation: Silk is central to Scied society, used not only for webs but for clothing, architecture, and tools. Some Scied can produce specialized silk, such as webbing that conducts electricity or resists fire, making them unrivaled engineers and artisans. Their cities, whether underground or suspended in trees, are marvels of silk-based construction, incorporating tunnels, bridges, and traps.
  • Religion and Philosophy: The Scied revere the Eternal Spinner, a mythical arachnid deity believed to have woven the first web of the universe. Their faith revolves around the idea that all life is interconnected, like strands of silk, and that disrupting the balance of the web brings chaos. Their prayers are often woven into symbolic patterns rather than spoken.
  • War and Defense: While generally peaceful among themselves, Scied are fiercely territorial. In times of conflict, they rely on ambush tactics, traps, and overwhelming coordination. Titanspinners act as frontline warriors, while Webweavers create defensive nets and Nightspinners operate as assassins.
  • Trade and Diplomacy: The Scied are cautious in their interactions with other races, but their silk is a highly sought-after commodity. They trade sparingly, preferring relationships that ensure mutual benefit and respect.

Trivia

  1. Web Cities: Some Scied colonies are entirely suspended in the air, with silk bridges and chambers connecting massive tree canopies. These cities are virtually impossible for outsiders to navigate.
  2. Pheromone Politics: Scied communicate emotions and intentions through pheromones, making it almost impossible to lie to another Scied.
  3. Silkcraft Weaponry: Scied warriors create weapons and armor from hardened silk, combining it with minerals for added durability.
  4. Matron's Mark: Matrons and Patrons weave a personal symbol into their webs to assert dominance and inspire loyalty.
  5. Web Music: The Scied have an art form where they pluck strands of silk to create harmonic sounds, considered a deeply spiritual practice.
  6. Titan's Duel: When two Titanspinners challenge each other for dominance, their duels often reshape entire landscapes.
  7. Eternal Patterns: Scied believe their silk patterns mimic the web of the universe and that each design holds cosmic significance.
