Yoioshi Gradation: Appendix – Time & Place

Nearly five hundred years have passed since the third world war, leaving a desolate landscape, where toxic storms rage; humanity teeters on the edge of extinction. Only surviving by burrowing into S.M.I.L.E. bunkers, which have each gained their own personality.

A man, a part of the first generation of bunker babies, Don Himagi, would become fed up with the dehumanizing laws laid down for those who lived within the confines of the bunkers. He would question not how terrible the outside world could be, but how we could begin to heal it to become habitable once again. Not wanting his people to be stuck within the limited spaces of the bunkers for generations, he would lead followers into a revolution, eventually forming not just a new government which would adopt other bunkers as a part of its territory, but would build an empire, that would see to the creation of a pair of twin cities, which are now the major centers of the outside world, and caused one of the greatest growths in food production and overall happiness in the history of the bunkers.

The Shin Sekai Federation, or S.S.F., is now one of the most powerful countries in the world, with each Ten’no successor focusing on specific parts of the society. Four hundred years later, a world where the surface air is no longer poison to breathe, eight connected cities which hold thousands of people, five hundred and six bunkers apart of the federation, and two mega layered cities; Arcenso and Tirasheppo, the twin cities and one of the first goals Himagi had created for his people to accomplish after his death.

Tirasheppo, a sanctuary that stands as a beacon of hope amidst the chaos and decay that still crawls the outside world. With a large focus on the rebuilding of society, the Federation’s primary focus has been the production of food and materials. Building underground seas for hydropower, safe water, and ensuring healthy soils within its territory for farming. Most of the residential and commercial zones are built within the four layers that sit on stilts over a massive crater. Superstructures pierce the beige ashen sky, each of its floors considered special districts. These towers rise far above the crystalline dome firmament that covers the edifices and bustling streets, protecting it from the anomalous storms that occasionally blow through.

Inside the crater below the stilted city is the restructured bunker which sprouted the city, now factories and urban slums referred to as the Industrial Zone, with streets stretching a measly twelve feet wide, just enough for the people to push by or ride bikes through. A labyrinth of buildings and platforms make up the one hundred ninety two thousand square miles that is the former bunker space. These cramped and chaotic living conditions, mixed with the lack of attention from the politics of the upper city, has led to a split between the two areas. While called one whole city, many of its residents consider them to be separate entities, with the local nickname for the Industrial Zone being ‘Freedom’, coming from the lack of governmental forces in the area, largely policed and protected by its citizens.

Due to obvious concerns, Eaftousia was made illegal when the bunkers were built, with people only able to use their powers if they had gained an Eaft-ID. This is a law that stayed with the Federation and is heavily monitored, as they discovered that despite their goal to rebuild life, there are various figures who oppose its progress or can’t see the greater good. Terrorists and criminals of various types have led to many setbacks in the reconstruction, causing the villainization of any non-licensed user. A term came out for these characters; Waruioshi, which originally was used to refer to any entity that was intentionally attacking the city, to now being any licenseless character using their eaftousia.

Along with the use of Waruioshi came a term to any licensed user who opposed them; Yoioshi. Much like Waruioshi, Yoioshi’s definition has been altered; from its World War 3 origin meaning Magi-Warrior, to being used by the Federation for some of its police, to being co-opted by corporations to be a type of legal vigilante. With a large portion of modern entertainment being taken over by these characters, sponsored as the new form of idols who use their eaftousia within a certain legal limit. It has become a public spectacle for Waruioshi to be dealt with by Yoioshi instead of the typical police, using Tirasheppo as a large coliseum, where at any moment action can take place.
